Here’s How to Check Insulation Levels

Insulation is a great way to improve the energy efficiency of your home during all seasons. It keeps hot air in during the winter and out during the summer. However, if you don’t have an adequate insulation level in your home, you won’t see all the energy savings that you should.

How do you know if you have the proper insulation level? It’s actually pretty easy to check your attic and walls to make sure you have insulation and that there is enough for your needs.

Checking Your Attic Insulation Level

Determining if you have enough insulation in your attic is a simple process. You might need one or more of the following depending on your attic

  1. A flashlight or other light source
  2. A ladder
  3. A board or other sturdy surface to walk on — in many attics, one wrong step can put your foot through the ceiling!

Once you’re in your attic, check the insulation level in several different locations. Is it covering your joists? If your insulation is packed down to be level with or below the top of your joists, you probably don’t have enough.

A quick pro tip: don’t just check the center of your attic. Look at your insulation levels at your eaves, too. You can lose a substantial amount of energy if your insulation is not sufficiently thick in your eaves.

Checking Your Exterior Walls

Another area to check for insulation is your exterior walls. This is also a simple process if you have any sort of outlets on the walls you want to check.

Be sure to turn off power to the outlet before you remove the outlet cover. Check the edges around the outside of the outlet box. If you have insulation in that part of the wall, it should be visible around the outlet.

If you determine that you do not have enough insulation in either location, contact your HVAC professional to talk about increasing your insulation levels.
